WHAT IS HAPPENING? Is the Earth Resetting Itself?
And is disaster for humanity the Earth’s way of healing itself?
Scientifically speaking, yes the Earth does have natural mechanisms to maintain its balance. However, disasters do not mean that the Earth intends to harm humans. They are part of natural processes that help sustain the planet’s equilibrium. When disasters occur, like what has happened to our brothers and sisters in Sumatra, questions often arise:
“Why did this happen?”
“Is the Earth angry?”
HOW DOES THE EARTH “RESET” OR HEAL ITSELF?
The Earth has natural regulation systems, such as:
- Volcanoes: Eruptions release gas and materials from deep within the Earth, create new fertile soil, and help regulate the carbon cycle.
- Earthquakes and tectonic shifts: These rearrange the Earth’s crust to prevent internal pressure from continuously building up.
- Floods, storms, and the water cycle: They cleanse and fertilize the land, distribute minerals, and help balance the Earth’s temperature.
- Natural climate change: The Earth has experienced ice ages and warming periods as part of a long process to stabilize global temperatures.
Without these processes, the Earth would not remain stable and could collapse from within.

ARE DISASTERS THE EARTH’S WAY OF REPAIRING DAMAGE CAUSED BY HUMANS?
Scientifically, it cannot be said that the Earth has intentions or emotions such as anger.
However:
- Deforestation leads to floods and landslides.
- Global warming caused by pollution results in more extreme storms.
- Excessive land exploitation causes land collapse, droughts, and environmental degradation.
This means that many disasters today are indeed triggered or worsened by human activities, not merely by natural processes alone.

WHY DO DISASTERS BECOME TRAGEDIES FOR HUMANS?
Because humans live and build civilizations in disaster-prone areas. For nature, these events are normal processes—but for humans, they can become devastating tragedies. Humans live on the Earth’s surface and build vulnerable civilizations. For nature, it is simply a natural cycle; for humans, it can be a massive catastrophe.
Examples:
- The eruption of Mount Tambora (1815) caused the “Year Without a Summer.” For nature, it was a volcanic cycle; for humans, it meant famine.
- The Aceh tsunami (2004) was part of tectonic balance—but it became deadly for those living along the coast.
STOP DAMAGING THE EARTH.
If not, the Earth will eventually stop tolerating us. Disasters are not coincidences—they are warnings.
Increase awareness in consumption, reject policies that harm the environment, and adopt good habits in waste management.
Do not wait until everything is gone. Start now. Because if not us, who? If not now, when?
Let us be more compassionate toward those who are currently affected.
Our best prayers go out to Sumatra and everyone who is struggling.
